Sadly, most people do not understand how a 401(k) works. The truth of the matter is that for most people if you fully fund your 401(k) for 35 to 40 years your retirement savings may only last a few years. Wow. If you are just hearing this for the very first time, we are sorry to be the bearer of bad news. If you have a 401(k), keep it and don't panic. But if you are expecting to retire solely on your 401(K), you may be in for a huge shock. While your retirement savings are growing, your tax obligation is growing too and a large part of your retirement is going to go to Uncle Sam.
